Come, follow me.
If the Master passed by you today, cupped your sweet face, looked in your eyes, and said, “Come, follow me,” would you come?
It’s intriguing how He called the men, and they came, giving up everything without really knowing why or what they were doing. Why did they go? Why do we go?
Was there freedom in His eyes? Did they feel seen and known and loved? in their true, deep down selves? Did they sense His goodness? Did they follow because of His miracle? Did they sense strength? Did they feel a touch of wholeness in their weak places? Did, for a moment, the heart caverns feel filled?
Come, follow me, into the wild, into the unknown, into the tender, wilderness of God, and I will make you fishers of men. Not only will I make you whole, but then you’ll impart my wholeness to others.
“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” Luke 5:31
Are you hurting? lost? weak? sick? sad? depressed? down? tired? weary? hungry? thirsty? frail? feeble? burdened? heavy-hearted? broken?
Good – then Jesus came for you.
Say yes, and He will excavate your heart to make more room. He will empty the emptiness and fill it with the fullness of Himself so that you can offer that cup of cold water to others just like you.
There’s really good news for us today.
“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” Romans 8:18
Even though I am a believer, sometimes, I mire myself in my personal sufferings. Do you do it too? Nothing we experience now compares to the work He did, is doing, and has done in us, to glory of Him in us. This is Paul’s way of saying, “Look up.” Jesus is in us, and we are seated at the right hand of God already, despite our present day situations.
“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.” Romans 8:26-27
Two things – the Greek word for “weakness” means “weak, feeble, and frail.” The Greek word for “helps” means “strives alongside.” Jesus and the Holy Spirit are continuously praying for all the saints, even when I am sinning, deep in the dark pit of the evil one’s ways, because even though I am His, I still mess up. I am still weak. I still sin. But even while I am doing it, the Spirit is striving with me to help me out of the sinful ways I am caught in. It’s fascinating, humbling, and amazing.
Look up. Follow Him. He’ll give you life, like you’ve never known, and help you to give it back to the dying world beside you.
